Welcome to the University of Washington Electrical Engineering Department! We invite you to bookmark this page and take time to explore. We hope that the information will be helpful, and that you will find intriquing and exciting course and research options so that you will decide to proceed with your application.
AUTUMN QUARTER APPLICATION DEADLINE
ALL application materials must be received by the deadline in order to assure consideration for admission. We will not be able to consider late applications. Applicants are responsible for tracking their electronic application to make sure that all items are submitted by the deadline. The University does not notify applicants of missing materials.
December 15 - International Students (applicants who currently hold or expect U.S. visas). The Graduate Admissions office recommends that students should submit applications by November 1 to provide more time for processing international transcripts. However, the EE Department recognizes that the November 1 date may be too early for some applicants and therefore accepts applications submitted up to December 15 for those who are unable to meet the November 1 deadline. Before proceeding and before returning to this site, international applicants should review the summary of Financial Ability for International Applicants
January 2 - U.S. citizens and Permanent Residents
PROCEED TO APPLICATION
(Please read the following section 'Criteria For Admission' before proceeding to the application.)
Criteria For Admission
Minimum requirements for all applicants
- An equivalent GPA of 3.2 on a 4.0 scale. The average GPA of admitted students is 3.65.
- GRE exam taken within the last 5 years. To allow sufficient time for the score reports
to be sent to the university, we recommend that applicants schedule the GRE exam no later than
October 1. The recommended GRE scores for competitive applicants are: Verbal - 500,
Quantitative - 700, and Analytical - 600 (or new analytical written score of 5 or 6).
Applicants should ask Educational Testing Service (ETS) to send scores to the University of Washington, institution code 4854.
Requirements for applicants without an undergraduate degree in Electrical Engineering
Requirements for international students
- TOEFL exam taken within the last 2 years. TOEFL test takers should consult
the Educational Testing Service.
The minimum score recommended for admission is
600 (paper-based exam), 250 (computer-administered), or 100 (TOEFLiBTI). Students admitted with scores
below these requirements are required to take the University of Washington Academic English Program
Diagnostic Examination (AEP) and an appropriate English language course.
Graduate School Memorandum 8
The TOEFL is not required of applicants who have or expect to have a degree from a U.S. institution before beginning graduate study at UW. The TOEFL is not required of applicants who are citizens of Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, or the United Kingdom.
- TSE exam or speaking section of the TOEFLiBT. A passing score is REQUIRED
OF ALL international students and U.S. permanent residents (including those with degrees
from the U.S.) who wish
to be considered for a teaching assistantship. If the TSE is no longer offered in the home
country of an applicant, the applicant may take instead the internet-based (TOEFLiBT), which
includes a section on spoken English. A passing
score on the TSE is 55, and a passing score on the speaking section of the TOEFLiBT is 28. The
TOEFLiBT is expected to replace the TSE. For more information on the exams, see www.ets.org.
