AUTUMN QUARTER APPLICATION DEADLINE
ALL APPLICATION MATERIALS MUST BE RECEIVED via the electronic process by the following deadlines. Late applications are not considered. Applicants are responsible for tracking application materials to assure all items arriving by the deadline. Applicants can track the status of the application by logging onto the electronic application.
JANUARY 1 - U.S. citizens and permanent residents
DECEMBER 15 - International students (Since international students are required to send an official transcript in addition to the electronic copy, we suggest that the official transcript be sent as early as possible in order to provide our offices with more time for processing. Our suggestion (not a requirement) is to arrange for official transcripts to arrive by November 1 or soon thereafter, if at all possible.)
Criteria For Admission
Requirements For All APPLICANTS
- GPA cumulative of 3.2 on a 4.0 scale. The average GPA of admitted both Ph.D. and Master's students is 3.6.
- GRE (Graduate Record Exam) test scores from an exam taken within the last 5 years. The recommended GRE scores for competitive applicants are: Verbal - 500,
Quantitative - 700, and Analytical - 600 (or new analytical written score of 5 or 6). Applicants
should ask Educational Testing Service (ETS) to send official scores to the University of Washington, institution code 4854. To allow sufficient time for the score reports
to be sent to the university, we recommend that applicants schedule the GRE exam no later than
October 1. Contact Educational Testing

Following is a list of all application materials required. The electronic application pages will provide more details on each of the
application items that is required. There is no application form for teaching or research assistantships; all applicants are automatically considered for these positions.

Additional Requirements for INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS
- TOEFL exam taken within the last 2 years. TOEFL test takers should consult
the Educational Testing Service.
Send to University of Washington, institution code 4854. The minimum score recommended for admission is
600 (paper-based exam), 250 (computer-administered), or 100 (TOEFLiBTI). Students admitted with scores
below these requirements are required to take the University of Washington Academic English Program
Diagnostic Examination (AEP) and an appropriate English language course.
Graduate School Memorandum 8
The TOEFL is not required of applicants who have or expect to have a degree from a U.S. institution before beginning graduate study at UW. The exception is that the TOEFL spoken English score is required from these students who wish to be considered for a teaching assistantship. The TOEFL is not required of applicants who are citizens of Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, or the United Kingdom, as English is the first language of those countries.
- TEACHING ASSISTANTSHIP ELIGIBILITY - In order to be considered for a TA position at the time of admissions, applicants who are NON-NATIVE SPEAKERS OF ENGLISH must either 1) have or expect to have a Bachelor's degree from a U.S. institution before beginning graduate study at UW, 2) submit a score of 26 on the speaking portion of the TOEFLiBT, 3) submit a score of 7.0 on the IELTS, or 4) submit a score of 55 on the TSE. Also available for students living in the Seattle area or for students after their arrival in the U.S. after admissions is the UW Versant English test; a minimum score of 70 will satisfy the spoken English requirement for TA elibibility.
