Below is the user interface, which is coded in Matlab, of the protection coordination system based on KBS. Please see the description of this module on the download files link.

protection coordination user interface

This tool has the ability to:
  • Identify mis-coordination of protective devices.
  • Suggest a better device for coordination.
  • Display the coordination data.

KBS rule module

The KBS rule modules are activated to identify miscoordinated pairs. Based on the selected source side and loadside devices one of the rule modules is called for each miscoordinated pair. Some common adjustment are:
  • Adjust the loadside device first
  • Adjust the current time characteristics of the load side devices to make the device operate faster.
  • Adjust the current time characteristics of the source side devices to make the device operate slower.

Curve Fitting

To construct this simulation, we need a mathematical description of the fuse and recloser data. An equation has been developed by fitting a curve to graph of the operating data.

Conclusion
  • The KBS protection coordination module is a tool that can assist both planning engineers and operators.
  • Given more protection device characteristic curves this simple module can be extended to a practical system.
