"With the EEIC grant I worked with Dr. El-Sharkawi on the NEPTUNE project, helping with component selection for a 10kV DC circuit breaker. Working on this project gave me good preparation for entering the working world. The EEIC grant was a great way to transition between being a student and being a professional. It provided me with an arena to test out and develop my newly acquired engineering skills."
-Denise Dennis (2002)
"What I liked the most was the real-world job training. In the face of complicated projects that had many parts, I had to come up with my own agenda. I was told there are many ways to go about solving a problem...and I get to decide how. It feels great to be in charge of my own learning. Overall, the experience was both a technical and motivational boost, and because of what I learned, I was chosen to co-op at IBM."
-Henry Yuen (2001)
"My research work through the EEIC impressed employers and helped me prepare for interviews. It also allowed me to learn electrical engineering concepts before my classes covered them, giving me an edge over my peers."
-Hans Isern (2001)
"It was a such a great experience that I would definitely love to do it again. Throughout the program, I was able to learn something outside of class that would be beneficial to my future career."
-Dominic Wu (2001)
What It Is:
The Electric Energy Industrial Consortium (EEIC) offers an opportunity for
EE undergraduate students to receive EEIC Undergraduate Assistantships during
the academic year, every Autumn, Winter and Spring quarter. The EEIC at
the University of Washington is an industrial collaboration program supported
by EEIC member companies, AREVA T&D, Bonneville Power Administration,
Puget Sound Energy, Seattle City Light, and Tacoma Power. The purpose of
the EEIC UG Assistantships is to provide undergraduate students with an
opportunity to work with faculty members in the electric energy area on
projects that involve applications of state-of-the-art advanced technologies
to power systems, power electronics and electric drives. These advanced
technologies include computing, electronics, control, and artificial intelligence.
EEIC Undergraduate Assistants are invited to participate in the poster sessions
during the annual EEIC Open House.
Eligibility:
EE Undergraduate Students, Junior level preferred, interested in exploring exciting new technologies and their applications to Electric Energy.
Stipend:
$1500 per quarter. The recipients will conduct a 3 credit project with a
faculty mentor in the area of electric energy. Selection criteria include
EE courses taken so far, performance, experiences and skills, career interests,
and other qualifications.
Deadline:
The deadline for submitting your application for Spring quarter 2006 will be announced in March 2006. Applicants complete a Catalyst on-line application which is made available via an email announcement sent approximately 2 weeks prior to the start of the quarter. For further information, contact Alex Mamishev, at mamisehv@ee.washington.edu, or 221-5729, EE215K.
Applicants will be informed of the selection result shortly after the deadline.
