Research Summary
As we try to interpret and control our environment more and more, we require more and more interface points with a particular environment. Gathering sensory data from distributed nodes in such environments requires specialized signal processing and computing architectures to process information in an efficient and timely manner.
Research in the Distributed Microsystems Lab focues on building compact, system on chip type nodes for such distributed microsystems. The signal processing for these systems is split into two major components. At the sensing (or actuation) plane itself, small hardware processing elements are local to every senso to provide real-time information or control of the environment. Signal processing at the central or base station consists of hardware and software, designed to integrate information gathered from the distributed nodes of the system. The sensing elements for these systems contain large quantities of sensors not only at various nodes but also within a node in order to gather large amounts of sensory information for redundancy and robustness of the overall system. Attention to the entire system at every level of design enables small, accurate sensing nodes that do not overwhelm the total comptuational capability of the system.
