I joined the Electrical Engineering Department as the graduate student advisor in September 2000, after 15 years in the Computer Science Department where I also served as the graduate student advisor. I love the work of helping to recruit new graduate students and then helping them to negotiate through the procedures of the department and university. I enjoy being a part of the community that develops among students, faculty, and staff.
My educational background includes a Bachelor's degree in English Education from the Oklahoma College for Women (OCW), now University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma (USAO), and a Master's in Social Work from the University of Washington. I have taught English at the high school level and have worked in social service agencies before finding my place in academic advising.
Outside of work, I am an enthusiastic Pacific Northwest gardener, and I spend lots of time planting, weeding and pruning in my garden - my specialty is native plants and perennials (my checkbook shudders when I pass a plant nursery). I volunteer at the Kruckeberg Botanical Garden and urge anyone interested to join us for an invigorating time in this beautiful garden. Indoors, I'm a pretty good competitive Scrabble player, and I'm always up for a game. And of course I try to catch all the Bruce Springsteen and Bob Dylan concerts that I can.
Amen to the Ferris Bueller quote on the home page of my EE colleague Stephen Keating: "Life moves pretty fast. You don't stop and look around once in awhile, you could miss it."
If there is light in the soul, there will be beauty in the person.
If there is beauty in the person, there will be harmony in the house.
If there is harmony in the house, there will be order in the nation.
If there is order in the nation, there will be peace in the world.
