Activity: LakeRidge Elementary School Robotics Demonstration
Date: March 2002
Coordinator: Linda Bushnell
Industry Participant: Andy Crick
Our autonomous mobile robotics professor and industry lab mentor had fun at Mrs. Wilson's first grade class at the Lakeridge Elementary School, Mercer Island (March 2002). The 30-minute demonstration included watching a video of the UW autonomous mobile robots in action (robot golf, foosball, air hockey), hands-on exploration of an autonomous mobile robot performing line following and obstacle avoidance, and up-close viewing of an autonomous mobile robot navigating a maze. Various parts that are used to make these LEGO robots were passed around so that the students could ponder the complexity of the robots.

Activity: Cherry Crest Elementary Hero Day
Date: March 7, 2002
Coordinator: Denise Wilson
Hero Day brings in professionals from around the Puget Sound area to talk to the entire student body (400 students) at Cherry Crest about future careers in various areas. It was our pleasure to relate the excitement of electrical engineering to the mysteries of why Pooh Bear is not afraid of lightning storms nor should he be. We discussed challenges, choices, and education as it relates to our choice of electrical engineering as a career.
