The Intelligent Systems Laboratory was established by Professor Robert M.Haralick and Professor Linda G.Shapiro. Initial support to create the lab came from the UW College of Engineering, the Department of Electrical Engineering, the Boeing Company, and the National Science Foundation. The lab was started to handle research activities in computer vision and artificial intelligence. The first research projects were in the area of automated machine vision for manufacturing (supported by the Boeing Commercial Airplane Group, the Washington Technology Center, and NSf) and for space applications (supported by NASA). More recent work has included document image analysis, target recognition, performance evaluation of computer vision algorithms, 3D object recognition and reconstruction, and image database systems. Research is supported by the federal government, the Washington Technology Center, several small Washington State companies, and the Boeing Company.
