Lighting and Optics Expert
In inspection tasks as well as in robot--guidance, the use of
appropriate lighting and optical devices produces better images and results
in more reliable results.
Lighting and optics designs are usually done by human experts and are redone for
each new part or class of parts. This project is developing
an
automated system that can suggest appropriate lighting and optics configurations for
given tasks with given parts or part classes.
We are studying lighting models used in graphics and developing our
own additions to these models. We are compiling the expert knowledge of what
kinds of configurations are good for various tasks and for various geometric object
features. The lighting optics expert will be able to suggest the placement
of lighting that will produce features having minimum variance for their observed
positions.
