Mathematical Morphology

The recent successful use of mathematical morphology in real time industrial applications of noise removal, background normalization, shape recognition, object flaw detection, and object feature extraction has made a number of researchers take notice, further explore, and use these techniques. Most of the real-time video-rate machines employed on the factory floor now have included in their operation set the morphological operations. This theoretical and experimental project is developing the engineering design methodology by which an optimal morphological operation processing sequence can be determined to extract a given kind of shape information from an image given the noise characteristics and expected occlusions to which the shape might be subject.
