JOINT BOEING-UW AVIATION PRIVACY PATENT AWARD

August 2012: A patent application on location privacy of air traffic communications, jointly filed by Dr. Krishna Sampigethaya (Boeing) and Prof. Radha Poovendran on April 13, 2010, was issued by the USPTO as patent# 8248294 on August 21, 2012.

ANDREW CLARK WINS WIOPT 2012 BEST PAPER AWARD

May 2012: Andrew Clark has received the best paper award at the Tenth International Symposium on Modeling and Optimization In Mobile, Ad Hoc and Wireless Networks (WiOpt 2012). The title of the paper was "Leader Selection for Minimizing Convergence Error in Leader-Follower Systems: A Supermodular Optimization Approach," and was co-authored by EE faculty advisors Linda Bushnell and Radha Poovendran. BASEL WINS THE UW EE OUTSTANDING RESEARCH AWARD

May, 2011: Basel Alomair has won the UW Electrical Engineering Outstanding Research Award, recognizing his outstanding contributions to research in the department.

BOEING-NSL PAPER RECEIVES BEST PAPER AWARD AT IEEE/AIAA DASC

October 4, 2010: Boeing-NSL paper by Krishna Sampigethaya and Radha Poovendran, titled "Visualization and Assessment of ADS-B Security for Green ATM," has been recognized with the Best Paper Award for the NextGen Surveillance Session at the 29th IEEE/AIAA Digital Avionics Systems Conference (DASC). The conference is being held at Salt Lake City, UT, from October 3-7, 2010. The paper focuses on the cyber-physical security of the Automatic Dependent Surveillance Broadcast (ADS-B) technology which is a key enabler for FAA's NextGen and Europe's SESAR. The assessment and mitigation of potential vulnerabilities of ADS-B is a challenging step towards meeting the enhanced safety, capacity, efficiency, airspace security, environmental performance goals and realizing other benefits in these next-generation air transportation systems. This paper streamlines this effort.  

BASEL WINS THE PRESTIGIOUS IEEE & IFIP WILLIAM C. CARTER AWARD
 

March 25, 2010: Basel Alomair has won the IEEE & IFIP William C. Carter Award for 2010 for his paper "Scalable RFID Systems: a Privacy-Preserving Protocol with Constant-Time Identification." Basel will receive the award in the opening ceremony of the 40th Annual IEEE/IFIP International Conference on Dependable Systems and Networks (DSN 2010) being held in June 2010 at Chicago, Illinois. The paper will be presented in the "Carter Award Paper" session at the conference on June 30. The William C. Carter Award has been presented annually since 1997 to recognize an individual who has made a significant contribution to the field of dependable computing through his or her graduate dissertation research. The award honors the late William C. Carter, a key figure in the formation and development of the field of dependable computing.  The William C. Carter Award is considered one of the most important awards in the field of dependable computing, and is sponsored by the IEEE Technical Committee on Fault-Tolerant Computing (TC-FTC) and the IFIP Working Group on Dependable Computing and Fault Tolerance (WG 10.4).

December 16-18, 2009: Dr. Gianluca Setti, Dr. Sergio Callegari and Dr. Fabio Pareschi from Universita' Di Ferrara, Italy, visited University of Washington, Seattle. They participated in research discussions with the group at NSL during their visit.

NSL RECEIVES PRIDE@BOEING AWARD FOR EXCEPTIONAL PERFORMANCE

December 10, 2009: NSL was presented with the Pride@Boeing award by Boeing. The Pride@Boeing award is a recognition of exceptional performance at Boeing, and was presented to: "show Boeing's appreciation for the special effort and high impact contributions NSL put forth on the Integrated Defense Systems (IDS) Analysis, Modeling, Simulation, and Experimentation on (AMSE) project for the Simulation of Security of Computer/Communication Networks Against Information Warfare Attacks." Radha was the UW PI; Sidharth Nabar and Tony Wu were the graduate students whose outstanding work led to this recognition.

2009 ARO WORKSHOP ON CPS SECURITY AT UW
 

August 28, 2009: A 1.5 day Army Research Office (ARO) workshop on the emerging and critical problem of cyber-physical systems (CPS) security in network-centric warfare and MANETs was organized by NSL and Boeing at the University of Washington, Seattle. The workshop was sponsored by Dr. Cliff Wang (ARO Information Assurance program director) and took place 26-27 August 2009, hosted by the Department of Electrical Engineering. LOUKAS WINS NSF CAREER AWARD
 

August 12, 2009: NSL Alumni Loukas Lazos, Assistant Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Arizona at Tucson, has earned a Faculty Early Career Development (CAREER) award from the National Science Foundation (NSF). NSF CAREER program is a foundation-wide activity that offers NSF's most prestigious awards in support of junior faculty who exemplify the role of teacher-scholars through outstanding research, excellent education and the integration of education and research within the context of the mission of their organizations. The 5-year grant has been awarded for his project entitled "CAREER: Securing Channel Access in Multi-Channel Ad Hoc Networks", and will be effective September 2009 until August 2014. Congratulations to him!

RADHA GIVES INVITED LECTURES AT SUMMER SCHOOL IN ITALY
 

July 20, 2009: The 4th Bertinoro PhD Summer School on Security of WIreless NetworkinG (SWING) was held July 5th - 10th, 2009 at the University Residential Center in Bertinoro (Forli-Cesena), Italy. SWING focuses on cutting-edge research in the area of security of wireless networking. This international school is open to PhD students, researchers, and practitioners willing to know the challenges in the future of this exciting area of computer science and to understand the new ideas that are being developed to solve them. Radha was one of the two invited professors who engaged in close interactions with the attending PhD students through discussions and projects on real research problems, expected to lead to potential scientific publications and long-lasting collaborations.

MINGYAN WINS THE BOEING RESEARCH AND TECHNOLOGY (BR&T) SILVER TEAM AWARD

June 15, 2009: NSL Alumni and Affiliate Faculty Dr. Mingyan Li was awarded the BR&T Silver Team award in recognition of her contributions to a cross-organization Boeing "International Airport Wireless Technologies Project". This project is to develop and transit state-of-the-art wireless technologies to enhance air-ground communication at airports for upcoming network-enabled airplanes, and Mingyan is in charge of wireless security issues. The Boeing team consists of Casey Fung, Mingyan Li, and Steve Magnuson from BR&T; Tim Mitchell, Edwin Lim, and Sudhakar Shetty from Boeing Commercial Airplanes; and Mel Antonio and Steve Kopecki from Boeing Commercial Aviation Services.

BR&T Silver Team award is typically awarded to teams and individuals who demonstrate creativity in addressing a critical need or solving a difficult problem, and it is among Boeing's top prizes. The team was recognized at a ceremony in Bellevue, Washington, on June 15, 2009.

NSL/NRL COLLABORATION IS FEATURED ARTICLE IN APR-JUN 2009 ISSUE OF IEEE TDSC

May 2009: The journal article Evaluating the Vulnerability of Network Traffic Using Joint Security and Routing Analysis is the featured article in the Apr-Jun 2009 issue of IEEE Transactions on Dependable and Secure Computing. The article was written by Patrick Tague, David Slater, and Radha Poovendran in collaboration with Jason Rogers at the Naval Reseach Laboratory.

May 2009: Andrew Clark is the latest member of the NSL to pass the Ph.D. Qualifying Exam in the EE Department.

PATRICK RECEIVES BEST STUDENT PAPER AWARD AT IEEE PIMRC 2007

September 2007: Patrick Tague was one of the recipients of the Best Student Paper Award at the IEEE Symposium on Personal, Indoor, and Mobile Radio Communications (PIMRC) held in Athens, Greece, for the paper entitled Probabilistic Mitigation of Control Channel Jamming via Random Key Distribution.

RADHA RECEIVES UCSD MENTOR RECOGNITION AWARD

December 2006: Professor Poovendran was chosen as a recipient of the Mentor Recognition Award from the University of California, San Diego (UCSD). He was nominated by Phillip Lee currently pursuing PhD in UCSD. New UCSD graduate students are asked to nominate the person who most influenced their academic life as an undergraduate.

NSL ENTERS COLLABORATION WITH BOEING FOR SECURING NETWORK ENABLED AIRPLANES

October 5, 2006: NSL is conducting research in collaboration with Boeing Phantom Works to secure the electronic distribution of airplane software, and is streamlining Boeing's initiative towards becoming part of standardization efforts in the aviation industry. Our work was presented as a position paper at the NSF sponsored National Workshop on Aviation Software Systems from October 4-5 2006 in Alexandria, VA.

NSL'S TECHNOLOGY TRANSFER: INTERNET SECURITY STANDARDS

September 2006: Our work on the AES-CMAC algorithm and its extensions have been published under the standards track of the IETF as RFC 4493, RFC 4494, and RFC 4615. This work which resulted in the technology transfer to the Internet is conducted by NSL in collaboration with Samsung Electronics.

INVITED PRESENTATION BY RADHA AT THE US-JAPAN WORKSHOP ON SENSORS, SMART STRUCTURES, AND MECHATRONIC SYSTEMS

November 13, 2005: Radha presented an invited talk at the US-Japan Workshop on Sensors, Smart Structures, and Mechatronic Systems, hosted by the University of Tokyo from November 12-13, 2005. This workshop was intended to be a forward-looking intellectual exercise bringing together leading researchers from both countries to deliver topical presentations and to help develop a clear picture of the current worldwide status of the field and future direction for collaboration between Japanese and U.S. researchers.

RADHA WINS PECASE AWARD

June 13, 2005: Professor Radha Poovendran was recently named a recipient of the Presidential Early Career Awards for Scientists and Engineers (PECASE). The PECASE program "honors and supports the extraordinary achievements of young professionals at the outset of their independent research careers in the fields of science and technology". It is the highest honor the United States' government bestows on young scientists and engineers in the early part of their careers. Radha was one of four UW recipients, out of only 58 nationwide. Congratulations!

INTAE JOINS SAMSUNG GROUP IN KOREA

2005: Dr. Intae Kang completed his PhD in December 2004, and joined as a Senior Research Engineer in the WiBro group at Samsung located in Korea.

Radha wishing all the best and bon voyage to Intae. In the meantime, Intae is
negotiating future study with NSL for his kids Brian and Andrew (youngest).

">May 26, 2004: Shalaka Bhuskute, one of the undergraduate advisee of Radha, will be finishing her undergraduate study here at UW this Spring. She has decided to accept an offer from Stanford University, for her MS/Ph.D. Shalaka also had offers from other top universities but chose Stanford over them.

Mar 25, 2004: Prof. Radha Poovendran gave an invited talk (on Secure Localization) at the Spring 2004 Secure Mobility Forum conference organized by National Security Agency (NSA). The conference took place in Santa Clara.

Mar 23, 2004: Intae presented a paper titled "COBRA: Center-Oriented Broadcast Routing Algorithms for Wireless Adhoc Networks" at the IEEE Wireless Communications and Networking Conference (WCNC) held in Atlanta, GA, from Mar 21-25.

ARO WORKSHOP ON INFORMATION ASSURANCE IN MOBILE WIRELESS NETWORKS

Mar 4, 2004: Radha organized (also served as Technical POC) a U.S. Army Research Office Workshop on Information Assurance in Mobile Wireless Networks from Mar 3-4, 2004. The workshop was hosted by EE department and the Center for Information Assurance of the UW. Radha is the Associate Director for Research of the Center. There were about 20 attendees from other universities, research labs and industries across the US at the workshop. The participating organizations included CMU, Georgia Tech, UCI, UCLA, UMass, Iowa State U, NEU, Intel, Microsoft, Boeing, NAI, NRL and ARO. The Vice Provost for Research Dr. Craig Hogan and EE Chair Bruce Darling gave the welcome speeches on behalf of UW and EE respectively on the first day of the workshop.

CENTER FOR INFORMATION ASSURANCE AND CYBERSECURITY IS ESTABLISHED

Dec 16, 2003: Radha became the Associate Director for Research at the University of Washington Center for Information Assurance and Cybersecurity. Radha is a founding member of this academic center which is a very recent collaborative effort at the UW and involves multiple disciplines and departments, including Electrical Engineering, across the UW campuses.

INVITED TALK AT NRL

September 3, 2003: Radha gave an invited talk at Naval Research Laboratory on sensor security. The title of the talk was "Enabling Energy-Efficient Secure Group Communications in Ad Hoc Networks."

PAPER PRESENTATION AT SAC 2003 AND THE BIG BLACKOUT

Aug 14, 2003: Mingyan presented a paper "Broadcast Enforced Threshold Schemes with Disenrollment" at the Selected Areas in Cryptography conference (SAC 2003) held in Ottawa, Canada. Radha also attended the conference. The conference was affected by the blackout that occured on Aug 14. But fortunately Mingyan was able to complete her presentation successfully before the incident happened. Both Radha and Mingyan were unable to return back to Seattle in time because of the big blackout. Presentation

RADHA'S TRIP TO MANASTASH RIDGE OBSERVATORY

August 5, 2003: Radha joined Prof. John Sahr, Prof. Rich Christie and their students on a field trip to Manastash Ridge Observatory (MRO). The MRO is located approximately 9 miles West-Southwest of Ellensburg, WA. The observatory is at an altitude of 3930' (1198 m), a longitude of 120.7278 degrees West, and a latitude of +46.9528 degrees. MRO is operated by the Astronomy Department of the University of Washington for the training of graduate and undergraduate students as well as for astronomical research. Some support for the observatory is also given by Central Washington University which is located in Ellensburg.

June 15, 2003: Radha attended the UW-MSR-CMU software security summer institute. This summer institute on the topic of software security is sponsored together by the University of Washington, Microsoft Research, and Carnegie-Mellon University.

April 11, 2003: Paul Liu, one of the first undergraduate advisee of Radha, will be finishing his undergraduate study here at UW this Spring. Paul has decided to accept the offer from the University of California, Berkeley for his MS/Ph.D. He also had offers from other top universities but he chose Berkeley over them. The intellectual environment complemented by the beautiful campus background closer to his home in Seattle seem to have made him choose UCB. We wish him all the best!

Jan 23, 2003: Mingyan Li has been awarded the 2003 SWE (Society of Women Engineers) Outstanding Graduate Student Award. Also, Shalaka Buskute, an undergraduate student in NSL, received the 2003 SWE Outstanding Undergraduate Student award. Both the students were presented the award at a ceremony during Evening With Industry Banquet organized by SWE.

Radha is the first person at the University of Washington to have received a ARO YIP award. The three year award is for "Information Assurance for Energy Constrained Wireless Sensor Networks." This area addresses the underlying science and technology survivable and secure communications and networks, information infrastructure protection, and survivable systems engineering. Its objectives are to provide secure, survivable, and assured communications over both the wired and wireless networks, including highly mobile networks. It is funded by the Computer and Information Sciences Division of ARO. Radha has also previously won (in 2001) NSF CAREER award which is NSF's most prestigious awards for outstanding young investigators.

LISA AWARDED COMPAQ/HP WiSE SCHOLARSHIP AND UW EE SCHOLARSHIP

May 30, 2002: Lisa Hansen, an undergraduate student in NSL, has been awarded the highly competitive Compaq/HP WiSE (Women in Science and Engineering) Scholarship for the academic year 2002-2003. The award was presented at the WiSE Spring Awards reception in May. Lisa is also the recipient of the UW EE scholarship awarded in Spring 2002.

RADHA AND MINGYAN RECEIVE DEPARTMENTAL ACCOLADES

May 21, 2002: Prof. Radha Poovendran was presented the UW EE Department Outstanding Teaching Award and also the UW EE Department Outstanding Research Advisor Award. This is the first time that a professor has won two departmental awards in the same year. Congratulations to Radha! PAPER PRESENTATION AT IEEE WCCI 2002

May 13, 2002: Intae Kang, a graduate student of NSL, presented a paper "On the lifetime extension of Energy-Constrained Multihop Broadcast Networks" at the IEEE WCCI (World Conference on Computational Intelligence) conference held in Honolulu, Hawaii.

PAUL NAMED THE MARY GATES SCHOLAR

Nov 2001: Paul Liu, an undergraduate student in NSL, has won the Mary Gates Scholarship and that makes him the first Gates Scholar at NSL. These prestigious and competitive grants are awarded on a campus-wide basis to undergraduates as a way to enhance their educational experiences, enabling them more fully to pursue their education and deepen their involvement in work with faculty on research, curricular design, the creative arts, and other forms of scholarly endeavor. PAPER PRESENTATION AT 51st IETF MEETING

Aug 7, 2001: Mingyan Li, a graduate student at NSL, presented a paper in the IRTF (Internet Research Task Force) Secure Multicast Group (SMuG) session, at the fifty-first IETF (Internet Engineering Task Force) meeting. The title of the paper was "Explicit Design of Sub-Linear Trees with pre specified key update communication bounds". The meeting was held in London, UK.

RADHA WINS NSF CAREER AWARD

May 15, 2001: Prof. Radha Poovendran has received a Faculty Early CAREER Award from CISE/ANIR division of National Science Foundation (NSF). The Faculty Early Career Development (CAREER) Program is a Foundation-wide activity that offers the National Science Foundation's most prestigious awards for new faculty members. The CAREER program recognizes and supports the early career-development activities of those teacher-scholars who are most likely to become the academic leaders of the 21st century. RADHA ENTERED IN MATHEMATICAL GENEALOGY

2001: Radha was entered into the Mathematical Genealogy Project database. The intent of this project is to compile information about all the mathematicians of the world. The project earnestly solicits information from all schools who participate in the development of research level mathematics and from all individuals who may know desired information.

NSL IS FOUNDED

Jan 2001: Network Security Lab (NSL) was founded by Prof. Radha Poovendran. The lab was established in the Department of Electrical Engineering at the University of Washington.
