Review of Dielectric Spectroscopy Solutions


All dielectric measurement systems consist of two key hardware components, a) Sensors, and b) measurement circuitry. There are numerous variants of each of these components. The sensor head design depends on the application and while off the shelf sensors exists, it often requires custom designed ones. The circuitry for dielectric measurement are standardized and can be purchased directly from most of the major measurement device manufacturers. Below is a list of companies that are active in this field.


Solartron Analytical:

The 1260A Impedance/Gain-phase Analyzer is without doubt the most powerful, accurate and flexible frequency response analyzer (FRA) available today. Two or four electrode impedance measurements can be performed in stand-alone mode making the 1260A the ideal choice for general materials characterization. Furthermore, the wide impedance range afforded by the 1260A makes it suitable for a wide range of applications, from highly conducting materials to insulators. Alternatively, when configured with a 1287A Potentiostat, the 1260A Frequency Response Analyzer becomes the most powerful impedance analyzer available to the electrochemist in the world today. 


Agilent Technologies:

Agilent impedance and combination analyzers provide very accurate and thorough component and material evaluation with various test fixtures. They measure impedance (inductance, capacitance, and resistance) at spot frequencies or across a range of frequencies. Also, the measurement capabilities of transmission parameter and spectrum analysis are available in the combination analyzers. On the other hand, the DC bias and the AC signal level swept measurement functions are available in the impedance analyzers to evaluate the device under actual operating conditions. In addition, some of impedance analyzers offer the temperature characteristic measurement solution in the wide temperature range from -55 °C to 150°C. Hence, the impedance analyzers are useful tools for testing a wide variety of components and materials under various test conditions.


Fluke Electronics:

The PM 6306 from Fluke Electronics is the most versatile RCL meter, allowing testing at any frequency up to 1 MHz. AC and DC test voltages are continuously adjustable, and the PM 6306 has a built-in contact check function to ensure optimum connection. With these capabilities, you can handle a wide variety of components under realistic test conditions.

If you want an instrument with remote programmability, consider the Fluke PM 6304 RCL meter. The PM 6304 has a basic accuracy of 0.1%, 3 test voltage levels and 204 test frequencies. The PM 6304C has an even higher basic accuracy, and can measure components or devices with an accuracy of 0.05%.
