The planar SPR probe aims to combine the best features of the SPR fiber probe and the SPR lightpipe. Like the fiber probe, the planar probe has a single-ended configuration allowing for dip-type applications. The miniaturized light pipe forming the probe element retains the advantages of that configuration, including a planar geometry and capability of multiple-band operation.

The telecentric optics of the planar probe allows the input and output light to travel through the same optical system. Different lightpipe bands come to a focus at different locations, allowing the light from each band to be conveniently collected by separate optical fibers.
