Electrical Engineering alumnus, Luca Cazzanti (Ph.D. ’07) was named GeekWire’s “Geek of the Week.” The honor goes to “characters of Pacific Northwest tech, science, games, innovation and more.” Being considered an “International Man of Science,” this tech Renaissance man is deserving of the title.

Cazzanti has worked in many diverse areas of research, from maritime traffic analysis and prediction, consumer behavior analytics, digital music identification and recommendation, fraud prevention, digital telecommunications, and underwater acoustic signal processing to name a few.

Cazzanti has divided his time between Italy and the United States, working for NATO. He applies his expertise in machine learning and data science to discover novel approaches in maritime security, utilizing maritime vessel traffic behavioral analysis

After immigrating to the United States from Italy when he was 14, Cazzanti was happy to return to Italy and share the rich cultural heritage with his children.

“I really wanted my wife and kids to experience Italy from the inside, not only as tourists,” Cazzanti said. “My kids are now seamlessly bilingual and very adaptable, and have developed the ability to spot similarities and differences between the way people in the U.S. and Italy get through life.”
