The National Defense Science and Engineering Graduate Fellowship (NDSEG) is a special scholarship from the U.S. Department of Defense. It offers a three-year stipend to individuals who have demonstrated the ability and special aptitude for advanced training in science and engineering.

UW EE Ph.D. student Tanner Fiez received the fellowship for his work in computer and computational sciences. Fiez works with UW EE Assistant Professor Lillian Ratliff on machine learning and optimization and artificial intelligence. He utilizes the theory from these research areas to create models of human decision-making and to work with applications in cyber-physical systems and transportation.

Fiez was one of the 150 individuals to receive the highly-competitive fellowship, which had over 3,500 applications this year.
