At the University of Washington
Department of Electrical Engineering
Our objectives at the 9-12 level are to further engage students in engineering and to expose them to a wide variety of electrical and
interdisciplinary engineering activities. We focus particular attention on informing the high school population about what the College
of Engineering and Electrical Engineering have to offer the undergraduate college student at the University of WAshington
Our Outreach Activities
22nd Annual AWSP/WASA Summer Conference
Coordinator: Linda Bushnell
(bushnell@ee.washington.edu)
Student Assistants: Tho Nguyen, Sean Hoyt
Industry Mentor: Andy Crick
Tho, Sean, and Andy provided demonstrations of the autonomous
mobile robots in the autonomous robotic control systems laboratory in
UWEE and spoke to students regarding the autonomous mobile robotics
program at UW. Demonstrations for the Pitsco LEGO dacta were one of the
highlights of this outreach effort.
Expanding your Horizons
Coordinator: Linda Bushnell
(bushnell@ee.washington.edu)
Student Assistants: Cindy Rueckert
Industry Mentor: Andy Crick
This series involves three one-hour workshops on autonomous mobile
robotics. The workshops are for 9th - 12th grade girls who are interested
in looking at career options. The workshops begin with a brief
introduction to robotics and possible careers followed by an opportunity
for the participants to break into groups and work on engaging a mobile
robot in navigating a maze. The technical emphasis of the workshop is on
feedback control and how autonomous robots differ from remote control
robots. Two offerings of this workshop series have hosted approximately 45
high school age young women in each series. This workshop will be offered
at the next EYH Day - see the Shorline Community College EYH Program info

Autonomous Mobile Robot Competitions
Coordinator: Linda Bushnell
(bushnell@ee.washington.edu)
Industry Lab Mentor: Andy Crick
High School students are invited to the Autonomous Mobile Robot
Competitions where seniors and graduate students in Electrical Engineering
engage wise and wondeful methods to construct robots that engage in an
enticing game of golf, foosball, air hockey or soccer at the end of each
quarter. Game playing is competitive and results are never certain until
the last ball is played. The courses uses LEGOs, sensors, motors and the
Handyboard microcontroller to construct autonomous mobile robots. Further
details on the course can be found by
clicking here. The competitions are
held the week of finals each quarter.
YMCA outreach workshop
Coordinator: Linda Bushnell
(bushnell@ee.washington.edu)
Student Assistants: Wei Chih Wang and Cameron Lee
This workshop was initiated after a call from Boeing's Outreach Program
regarding media reports on the EE462 mobile robot competition, a regularly
scheduled senior class offering at the University of Washington. In this
workshop, junior high and high school students learn how to strategically
place sensors on their autonomous LEGO mobile robots, generate control
strategies, program the robot, and compete with their robots in a game. In
its most recent offering (March 2001), this workshop hosted 8 junior high
and high school students from the Seattle YMCA in efforts to use
engineering and science to build smarter and stronger robots.
