Professional Master’s Program

Electrical Engineering and Law Concurrent Degree (JD/MSEE)

The Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering is pleased to offer a joint degree program with the University of Washington School of Law. Leading to a Juris Doctorate and a Master of Science in Electrical Engineering, this concurrent degree program will provide comprehensive education to students who seek to work at the intersection of electrical engineering and law. The degree will expose students to cutting-edge research and provide them with a valuable credential to gain access to opportunities within the growing field of patent law.

Students will complete their MSEE through the Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering’s Professional Master’s Program. This unique program features industry-focused curriculum with courses offered once a week in the evening. The program format allows concurrent degree students to complete their law coursework during the day.

Admissions Process

Admission to the concurrent program requires separate applications to the Electrical & Computer Engineering Professional Master’s Program and to the Law School. Acceptance will require a clearly enunciated, well-reasoned application detailing the applicant’s purpose and goals for pursuing both degrees.

For admissions information and eligibility requirements, please review each department’s requirements:

Degree Requirements

Up to 18 credits of Electrical Engineering courses may be utilized towards the Law School elective requirement. Additionally, 12 credits of Law coursework may be utilized towards the 45 credits required for the MSEE. As such, the combined total credits for the concurrent degree is 150, 30 fewer than if the two degrees were pursued independently.

What Our Students Say

Greg Rosenthal (JD/MSEE ’14). In-house Counsel; Sonova Group

“My outstanding experience with UW’s JD/MSEE program gave me the skill set to excel as a patent attorney. Following graduation, I joined a top U.S. law firm, where I provided counsel to companies such as Intel, Microsoft and T-Mobile. Now, I continue to utilize the technical and legal skills I gained from the program as in-house counsel for an international technology company. I truly believe that these professional opportunities would not have been possible without having completed the JD/MSEE program.”
