Professor Howard Jay Chizeck has been elected to the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering’s (AIMBE) College of Fellows for 2011. Chizeck was elected for his “contributions to the use of control system theory in functional electrical stimulation assisted walking.”
The AIMBE consists of 1,000 individuals who are the outstanding bioengineers in academia, industry and government. These leaders in the field have distinguished themselves through their contributions in research, industrial practice and/or education. Most Fellows come from the United States, but there are international Fellows. Fellows are nominated annually by their peers and represent the top two percent of the medical and biological engineering community. Professor Chizeck will be inducted into the 2011 class of fellows during a formal ceremony at AIMBE’s Annual Event in Washington, D.C. on February 21, 2011.
From 1981 until 1998, Professor Chizeck was at Case Western Reserve University, serving as Chair of the Department of Systems, Control and Industrial Engineering from 1995 – 1998. Professor Chizeck joined the University of Washington, as the Chair of the Electrical Engineering Department in August 1998, and he served in this role until September 2003. He was elected a Fellow of the IEEE in 1999 “for contributions to the use of control system theory in biomedical engineering.” Currently he is a Professor of Electrical Engineering and an Adjunct Professor of Bioengineering at the UW.
Professor Chizeck’s research interests involve systems and control theory and its application to biomedical problems. His current work involves the control of telerobotic surgery systems and of neural prostheses.
