Abstract
Radio frequency identification (RFID) is a wireless technology based on modulated backscatter. There is growing interest to the RFID systems which operate in unlicensed UHF band because of their long range. In this talk I will present an RF-centric overview of UHF RFID technology. First, we will cover the history of RFID, operating principles, basic theory, RF link budget, and tag/reader/system characteristics. Then, we will discuss the present state of UHF RFID technology illustrated with several practical design examples and most common applications. Finally, we will discuss the latest developments in UHF RFID and potential future research challenges.
Biography
Dr. Pavel Nikitin is a Lead Engineer at Intermec Technologies, Everett, WA where he is actively involved into the research, design, and development of UHF RFID systems. He is also an affiliate faculty in Electrical Engineering Department at University of Washington. He received Ph.D. in Electrical and Computer Engineering from Carnegie Mellon University and worked at Ansoft and IBM. He is the author of approximately 50 technical publications and 20 patent applications.
