Passive sonar signals — and, in particular, those that are modulated — open a new dimension of statistical signal processing called complementary statistics. We are exploring the efficiency of complementary statistics by experimenting on common signals such as environmental sounds and speech. Our research has shown promising results in detecting speech events in environments as noisy as a very loud restaurant with a signal-to-noise ratio of -25 dB.
