Adjunct Professor Ulrich Hetmaniuk, who is an Associate Professor in the Department of Applied Mathematics, has been appointed co-director of the Northwest Institute for Advanced Computing (NIAC). NIAC was established by the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory and the University of Washington to advance the use of computing in engineering and scientific discovery.
“NIAC serves as a center of excellence and a center of collaboration for the Pacific Northwest, which has a large and increasing number of organizations that are developing and employing advanced computing,” Hetmaniuk said.
Hetmaniuk will be involved in the day-to-day and strategic activities of the institute, from community outreach to building teams for proposals and projects. He succeeds co-director and EE Professor Mani Soma. Prior to Soma’s tenure, EE Professor Vikram Jandhyala was the original co-director.
