April 2, 2006

dentonFormer UW Engineering Dean Denice Denton, died early Saturday June 24th in San Francisco. Officials believe her death to be a suicide. Dr. Denton, who also held an appointment in the EE department, led the College of Engineering at the UW from 1996 to 2004, and was the first woman to hold such a position at a top research institution. She was a nationally recognized educator and in 2004 was named Chancellor at the University of California, Santa Cruz. Denice Denton will be remembered as a strong and visionary leader who was a champion for women in science and passionate about creating opportunity for the underrepresented. We are deeply saddened by this loss.
